A Japanese company producing nano cellulose / cellulose nanofiber materials is looking for partners in the EU for joint development projects

A Japanese company that produces biomass-derived nano cellulose, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) is seeking business partners in the EU for joint development of molded products out of CNF composites. A joint-venture partnership is aimed and in case of successful production of the products, the partnership could be extended into a commercial agency/distribution services agreement. The partners should have plastic molding know-how and interested in CNF applications and resin composite materials

The Japanese company produces biomass-derived nano cellulose / cellulose nanofiber (CNF), a next-generation ecological material that is recyclable and biodegradable.

Moreover, using biomass such as trees and plants as a supply for manufacturing nano cellulose / cellulose nanofiber materials is not only environmental friendly but also cost-effective and stable.

Currently, the company is seeking partners that jointly with the company could develop molded products made of the company?s CNF composites (masterbatches) in order to expand these material?s usages making use of their lightness, strength and biodegradability.

The goal would also be to market these products in Europe.

A joint-venture partnership could be aimed and in case of a successful production of the products, the partnership could be extended into a commercial agency/distribution services agreement.

The company has established a manufacturing process of CNF composite materials (masterbatches) consisting of the following plastics:
- polyethylene (PE)
- polypropylene (PP),
- poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC)
- polystyrene (PS)
- acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
- poly lactic acid (PLA)
- poly carbonate (PC)
- poly butylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT)
- acryl (PMMA).
- poly butylene succinate (PBS)
- poly butylene succinate adipate (PBSA)

The actual industrial manufacturing process of making various type of thermoplastic CNF composites is rare. There are only a few companies/Institutes including this company that can manage the manufacturing process of thermoplastic CNF composites. Tensile strength of all of the above mentioned CNF reinforced thermoplastic composite materials are enhanced, compared to materials made of only thermoplastic. CNF also makes the resin to be thermally stable. CNF reinforced composites have less deformation, compared to those without CNF when they are heated.

CNF reinforced composites, which are stronger, lighter and more thermally stable, have huge potential in all kinds of plastic material application fields including automobile, airplane, packing, film, coating etc.

The company is receiving a subsidy from Japanese government in 2018 for of a highly advanced technologies? project about combining the technologies of manufacturing formed PLA (made by supercritical CO2 extrusion technique) with mixing of CNF to form PLA that is biodegradable. The business related to that technology has just started manufacturing biodegradable food trays with formed PLA and CNF.

Collaborating with the company on designing plastic products like trays, cups and vessels is required.

In case of a successful production of the products, the partnership could be extended into a commercial agency / distribution services agreement for the products in Europe.
Therefore, the ideal partner has some experience of branding and marketing/promotion for new materials that are ready for the market.

Advantages & innovations:

1.The company is one of the first organizations that established an actual industrial manufacturing process for making various type of thermoplastic CNF composites and it is the only one that has nine kinds of resins + CNF composite material with enhancing their strengths adapted to the mechanical aspect.

2. The maximum concentration of mixed cellulose is 40.0 %, which is the highest rate in the world, and the company is trying to further increase the concentration as well as mechanical strength. For example, when PP is mixed with 40 % of CNF, tensile strength of PP is enhanced from 32 N/mm2 to 48 - 49 N/mm2.

As a result CNF composite can be stronger and lighter.

3. In order to make biodegradable plastic with CNF, the company has been working on CNF composites with biodegradable material such as PLA, PBAT, PBS and PBSA.

Unlike most of its competitors the company has already succeeded in making PLA, PBAT, PBS and PBSA mixed with CNF which could contribute to solve plastic pollution.

4. The company is the only one that challenges to make foamed CNF + PLA and foamed CNF + PBAT, PBS, PBSA in order to make lighter and more biodegradable material.
