Plastics and composite materials R&D centre offers technical skills for the development of new polymer materials and innovative projects.

A French R&D centre and engineering school specialised in plastics and composite materials proposes technical competencies for the characterization and the development of new polymer materials

Research is focused on recycling, thermoplastics composites and bio-based materials

Expertise includes the development of thermoplastic composites containing diverse fillers (e.g hollow glass microbeads, natural fibers, graphite) and polymers blends for industrial applications such as automotive, transport, cosmetic and packaging.

Another research focus is plastic waste recycling and formulation; for example End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV), and waste electronic and electrical equipments (WEEE).

Finally, the centre is specialised in sustainable and eco-friendly polymer materials such as mulch films, home furnishing and biodegradable food packaging.

The R&D centre technical skills are the following:

? Melt processing techniques
? Thermoplastic formulation
? Development of new polymer materials;
? Polymer characterization (chemical, physical, mechanical and rheological)

The centre has got the following facilities and equipment:

? Physico-chemical Analyses:

- Infrared spectrometers using ATR transmission and reflection (FTIR)
- Infrared Microscopes (micro-FTIR) using transmission and dispersive reflection
- Sequential X-ray fluorescence spectrometer
- UV-visible spectrometer
- Gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (GC/MS)
- Goniometer (equipped with heating plate)
- Helium pycnometer
- Soxhelet extraction
- Optical microscope

? Thermal analyses:

- Muffle furnace
- Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA)
- Karl Fischer titration
- Moisture analyser
- Differential scanning calorimetry (DCS)
- Vicat softening point (methods A and B)
- Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT)

? Mechanical and rheological analyses:

- A or D Shore hardness
- Tensile, flexural and compression testing
- IZOD and Charpy machine (with 0.5, 2 and 4J pendulum, temperature ranges from -50°c to 250°C ± 1°C)
- Melt flow index (MFI/ MVI)
- Capillary rheometer

? Melt-processing techniques

- BUSS kneeder (up to 40 kg/h)
- ZSK32 Twin-screw extruder equipped with two side feeders, liquid injection systems, and Gala underwater pelletizing system(up to 200 kg/h)
- ZSK18 Twin-screw extruder (450°C maxi) with three gravimetric feeders (0,2-20 kg/h )
- Caccia 200-L turbo mixer (up to 10 000 rpm)
- Thermo-Hakke batch mixer 20 Injection Moulding Machines (50 to 200 tons, gas and water-assisted injection and co-injection moulding,
- 3 single screw extruders
- 1 blown-film machine (width 50 cm )
- 1 sheet extruder (300µm to 5 mm, width 80 cm)
- 5 thermoforming machines

The R&D centre proposes services to industrials coming mainly from automotive, transport and aeronautics sectors but also from food and cosmetic packaging and construction sectors. The partners sought should be keen to integrate R&D into their products and projects development processes. They are interested in research cooperation agreements, technical cooperation agreements and license agreements with industrials but also with R&D centers and academia. They are also open to collaborate in the frame of EU projects such as Horizon 2020 projects or Interreg projects.
